Weekly Best Movie Quotes Valentine's Day Edition #9

This is a weekly posting of movie quotes that have made a lasting, memorable impression with audiences. In no particular order, here is this week’s best movie quotes. But this week is a little different, as it's Valentine's Day and let's face it, love is often the driving force behind every great story and pushes the characters within to their limits in order to obtain success. This week's set of quotes are inspired by movies that have demonstrated the notion of love conquering all. While I know I'm missing a bunch, these are ones that made a lasting impact on me throughout the many years of watching movies and besides, there's always next year. Happy Valentine's Day everyone and remember to show that special someone how much they mean to you.

On this day for celebrating love, this special edition is dedicated to my best friend and amazing girlfriend Katie, who I love with all my heart and soul. This one's for you baby.

“As far as boyfriends go, Paulie Bleeker is totally boss. He is the cheese to my macaroni. And, I know that people are supposed to fall in love before they reproduce, but... I guess normalcy isn't really our style.”

Ellen Page brings a lovable, humorous charm in her portrayal of the misfit pregnant teenager, Juno. Packing a well written story, vibrant cast of characters, and great one-liners, the movie was well received by audiences everywhere. While possessing feelings for Paulie the entire movie, it is not until the end that he assumes his role at her side, and rightfully so considering he is the baby's father. Following the baby's birth, the infant boy is given up for adoption to the well deserving Vanessa (Jennifer Garner), in addition to Juno and Paulie finally becoming a loving couple. The line itself is narrated by Juno at the film's conclusion.

John Beckwith: “I went with Chazz (crashed a funeral) who you forgot to tell me is totally insane. He also might be a genius because it actually does work, he's cleaning up.”

Claire Cleary: “John!”

John Beckwith: “I'm sorry, I'm sorry. That's neither here nor there. Anyway, I saw this widow and she's a wreck. She has just lost the person she loved the most in this world and I realized we're all going to lose the people we love. That's the way it is, but not me. Not right now. Because the person I love the most is standing right here and I'm not ready to lose you yet. Claire, I'm not standing here asking you to marry me, I'm just asking you not to marry *him* and maybe take a walk, take a chance.”

Two divorce lawyers, John Beckwith and Jeremy Grey (Vince Vaughn), crash weddings to pick up women, by using a variety of methods to play off of the emotional highs from watching their female friends and family wed. The dynamic duo continue to utilize this strategy until they attempt to crash the Cleary Wedding, where both men eventually end up meeting and falling for Secretary of Treasury, William Cleary's daughters. John instantly connects with Claire and attempts to develop a relationship with her, even though she already has a less than desirable boyfriend. Meanwhile, Jeremy fights the notion initially of becoming involved with Claire's sister, because of Gloria's (Isla Fisher) questionable sanity, but eventually decides to marry her and the event is where John declares his true love openly to Claire. John's alter confession is believable because even though he's throwing himself out there, he is not unrealistically requesting her to marry him or anything too extreme. He just wants her to give him a chance, which let's admit it, we've all been there. A great comedy and commendable love story.

“I love you. Always have. I wanna marry you”

Most are familiar with William Wallace's gallant struggle to claim freedom for the Scots from their British oppressors. But we must remember that his quest against tyranny was forged from love and a secret marriage that was tragically cut short. William's concealed union to Murron was to prevent an English noblemen from instituting Primae Noctis and sleeping with her on their wedding night. However this is unsuccessful, as she is publicly executed after a confrontation with English soldiers and William's failed attempt to rescue her. This horrid event drives the heartbroken Scot to begin the revolution that we all associate with his name. Certainly tragic, but proof of how love's influence can push us to achieve what we are truly capable of.

Jack Skellington: “My dearest friend, if you don’t mind…I’d like to join you by your side. Where we can gaze into the stars…”

Sally and Jack (duet): “And sit together, now and forever. For it is plain, as anyone can see. We're simply meant to be.”

Tim Burton's 75 minute stop motion is a masterpiece that only his dark artistic imagination could craft. The story revolves around Jack Skellington, who resides in Halloween Town with residence that are the fabrics of nightmares. Following a Christmasy experience and already bored with the same routine every year, Jack embarks on a quest to become Santa Clause ("Sandy Claws"). It is known earlier in the film that the rag doll, Sally has feelings for Jack, but it is not realized by the skeleton himself until the story's conclusion. The two confess their feelings for each other, before sharing a romantic embrace and kiss as the movie ends.

Tony: "You've taken such good care of me. I've been in a tough spot, but you got me through it, so...Right?"

Pepper: "Thank you."

Tony: "Yeah."

Pepper: "Thank you for understanding."

Tony: "Yeah, yeah. Let's talk clean-up."

Pepper: "I'll handle the transition, it'll be smooth."

Tony: "Okay. What about the press? Because you only had the job for a week. That's gonna seem..."

Pepper: "Well, with you it's like dog years."

Tony: "I know."

Pepper: "I mean, it's like the Presidency..."

Tony grabs hold of her lips with his own and the two kiss passionately.

Tony: "Weird?"

Pepper: "No, it's not weird."

Tony: "It's okay, right?"

Pepper: "Yeah."

Tony: "Run that by me again."

The two begin to kiss again but are interrupted by Rhodey (Don Cheadle)

Rhodey: "I think it was weird. You two look like two seals fighting over a grape."

We've been waiting since Iron Man to see these two get together, especially with their awkward but intense chemistry. The former assistant, Pepper Potts, takes over running the empire of Stark Industries in the sequel, as Tony believes his time to be short due to a side effect from the mini reactor in his chest keeping him alive. The tension between the pair comes to a head as Tony's lifestyle declines because he believes to be dying. However, this is resolved at the film's conclusion, when the two finally share a romantic rooftop kiss. The intimate moment is made comical when they realize Rhodey has witnessed the entire conversation and kiss, before adding his hilarious two cents.

Rose: “I love you, Jack.”

Jack: “Don't you do that, don't say your good-byes. Not yet, do you understand me?”

Rose: “I'm so cold.”

Jack: “Listen, Rose. You're gonna get out of here, you're gonna go on and you're gonna make lots of babies, and you're gonna watch them grow. You're gonna die an old... an old lady warm in her bed, not here, not this night. Not like this, do you understand me?”

Rose: “I can't feel my body.”

Jack: “Winning that ticket, Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me... it brought me to you. And I'm thankful for that, Rose. I'm thankful. You must do me this honor. Promise me you'll survive. That you won't give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise.”

James Cameron's blockbuster, record setting (highest-grossing, until Avatar), critically acclaimed love story captivated audiences in 1997. The doomed ship's tragic voyage became the setting for one of the most popular love stories to grace the big screen. The tale of Jack and Rose is believable, eternal, breaks class boundaries, defies all odds, and results in tragedy. These factors all come together to tell a lengthy tale, but more importantly, one hell of a love story. Jack's final expression of love while slowly meeting his ice cold fate in the frigid waters of the Atlantic is a testament to true love. After assuring Rose that she would survive the grim situation, he is allowed to sink to his watery grave as the heart broken woman is rescued. However, a now older Rose passes away at the film's conclusion and appears in her younger form to reunite with her beloved in a heavenly form of Titanic, with a love that truly transcends death.

Shrek: “Um... Fiona?”

Princess Fiona: “Yes, Shrek?”

Shrek: “I... I love you.”

Princess Fiona: “Really?”

Shrek: “Really, really!”

Princess Fiona: “Mmmm... I love you too.”

Shrek and Fiona's happily ever after is the perfect fairytale ending and a prime example that inner-beauty is what really matters. Instead of remaining the beautiful princess, Fiona transforms into an ogre by the first kiss of her true love, Shrek. What can be said about the ogre's confession above, its charming, heart-filled, and comical. Already previously mentioned in an earlier edition, if you haven't seen Shrek, what are you waiting for?

“No, you submit, do you hear? You be strong, you survive... You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you.”

At the heart of this war story on the frontier lies a relatively deep love story. The band of two Mohicans and white adopted son, Nathaniel Hawkeye, rescue Colonel Munro's two daughters and Major Duncan Heyward (Steven Waddington) from a group of treacherous Hurons who betray them. Upon spending some time together on their journey and reaching the fort, it becomes apparent that feelings are developing between Hawkeye and Cora. The romance scene that follows is classy and without nudity, while still expressing phenomenal passion between the pair. Following the fort falling to the French, the small band of survivors find themselves seeking shelter under a waterfall. This line is delivered after Hawkeye and the two Mohicans decide to let the group be captured while they escape so that they can rescue them later. By time our heroes catch up with the captives they have arrived at the Huron village. A blood sacrifice is demanded from Munro's decedents and Cora is to be offered up, while her sister Alice (Jodhi May) is taken to be executed by the film's main antagonist, Magua (Wes Studi), and his war party. If you haven't seen it, I won't ruin the ending ,since the film possesses an amazing climax. But if you can tolerate some pretty intense violence and want to see just a genuinely good flick, it's definitely worth a visit.

Jor-El (Marlon Brando): “My son, I’ve tried to anticipate your every question. This is one I, I’d hoped you would not ask.”

Clark Kent: “My attachment. Um, the feelings which I have developed for a certain human being, deeply effected me father.

Jor-El: “You can not serve humanity by investing your time and emotion in one human being at the expense of the rest. The concepts are mutually exclusive.”

Clark Kent: “And if I no longer wish to serve humanity.”

Jor-El: “Is this how you’ll repay their gratitude? By abandoning the defenseless, the needy for, for the sake of your selfish pursuits?

Clark Kent: “Selfish? After all I’ve done for them. Will there ever come a time when I’ve served enough? At least they get a chance for happiness. I only ask as much, no more.”

Jor-El: “Yours is a heart of happiness. The fulfillment of your mission and inspiration must have felt, you must have felt that happiness within you. My son surely you cannot deny that feeling.”

Clark Kent: “No, I cannot, anymore than I cannot deny the other, which is stronger in me father. So much stronger. Is there no way then father? Must I finally be denied the one thing in life which I truly desire.”

Jor-El: “If you will not be Kal-El, if you will live as one of them, of their kind as one of them, then it follows that you must become one of them.”

The red sun chamber lights up

Clark Kent and Lois Lane's relationship defines the word classic. This one stretches all the way back to the birth of Action Comics and has been explored and played out through multiple scenarios and imaginings. While the theatrical release of Superman II does an adequate job displaying the chemistry of this larger than life hero and the famous reporter, the Richard Donner Cut is more commendable for its steady romantic build. It also provides more opportunities to demonstrate Lois's infatuation with all of Superman's personalities (Kal-El, the Man of Steel himself, and most importantly Clark Kent). This scene and the dialogue spoken between Superman and his father, Jor-El are more powerful, as Clark decides to become just an average human being and give up his immortality and near invincibility for Lois Lane. How many of you would give up these things for the person you love and desire to be with most? I say Donner certainly knows how to purvey romance and true love.

Angelica: “Wait! There is something I want to say to you. Something I’ve wanted to say, from the moment we’ve first met.”

Jack Sparrow: “Go on then.”

Angelica: “I love you.”

Jack Sparrow: “As do I. Always have. Always will.”

Leans in for a kiss but breaks it off while brushing her lips.

“I gotta go.”

He runs back to his boat and deserts her on the small island.

With love that could only exist between two pirates, the pair spend the movie betraying and selling each other out. However, they always seem to maintain the best intentions for the other, even if it doesn't appear so at the time. In the end Angelica admits to Captain Jack that she does possess strong feelings for him and, while the pirate reciprocates, his response is one that is only fitting for his awkward, comical personality. You just watch it and cannot help but laugh, especially with the first watch. As always, Depp sells the role in such a phenomenal, believable way that the scene is just perfect. The chemistry between the two characters is real and Jack's reaction matches his personality as the borderline eccentric pirate that we've all come to know and love. The writers couldn't have done a better job at wrapping up this film and the subplot love story that's interwoven it it.

Mikaela Banes: “Okay, listen to my voice. I love you, and I need you. Please. Please, come back to me. Sam, please! I love you.”

Following a out of body, heavenly experience, Consciousness slams back into Sam

Sam Witwicky: “I love you. I love you.”

While it seems quite ridiculous now, after Megan Fox is noticeably absent from the third film, Sam and Mikaela's struggle like numerous young couples to reach the point of confessing their love for each other. When Sam is clinically dead for a few minutes, Mikaela reveals how much the "chosen" young man means to her. It is only after he returns to the world of the living that Sam is able to express his love for her. Maybe it was a sign of what was to come with their relationship, but it is certainly an unforgettable moment for love in the action flick. Besides, their relationship was one of the essential factors that seemed to be missing in the third installment and may have been able to add a little more to the widely criticized followup.

Jerry Maguire: “I love you. You... you complete me. And I just...”

Dorothy: “Shut up, just shut up. You had me at ‘hello’.”

The movie of a sports agent who decides to form his own agency because of adopting a mission statement of pure honest was widely accepted by audiences. There are a variety of memorable quotes throughout the film ("Show me the money"), but we're looking for quotes expressing love in this edition. With that said, this flick is certainly more than just a comedy, with its love story so intricately interwoven into the plot. After all, single mom, Dorothy, is the only one who initially decides to go with Jerry when the 35-year-old announces that he will be forming his own agency. This line is delivered in the latter half of the film when Jerry flies back home and the two express their love for each other. Parodied numerous times, the dialogue shared between the two is heart-filled and, at the time, original.

Edward: “Goodbye.”

Kim kisses him

Kim: “I love you.”

Another Tim Burton film to make our romantic list seems somewhat ironic given his normal approach to filmmaking, but what can I say, the man knows how to incorporate love into his darker tones. The incomplete Edward is extracted from his gothic mansion home and led down into suburbia. We follow him on his journey through an overly normal lifestyle as he tries to fit in with the local population and the Boggs' family that takes him in. During this time, Edward falls in love with Kim Boggs and is constantly tormented by her arrogant boyfriend Jim (Anthony Michael Hall), who meets his demise at the story's conclusion. Edward sheers are thrust into Jim's chest after he slaps and tosses Kim. Following their struggle, Kim confessed that she indeed loves Edward too and the two share a kiss, but leaves him behind at the mansion and lies to the mounting mob. She informs the assembled residences that Edward and Jim killed each other in a struggle and all that remains of the artificial man is the scissorhands that are presented to them with her testimony. Sacrificing her own happiness and chance to be with the one she loves, Kim lies to protect the misunderstood Edward.

“I came across time for you, Sarah. I love you. I always have.”

As this action, science fiction flick's release predates my birth, I always wondered how far into the movie it took audiences to piece together that Kyle Reese was actually the father of John Connor. Let's try to wrap our heads around this whole idea first. Legendary future human resistance leader John Connor sends one of his best soldiers back through time to protect his mother, Sarah Connor, from a cybernetic assassin known as a terminator. This soldier, Kyle Reese, was given a picture of Sarah (by Connor himself) in the future and became infatuated with the young woman, so he volunteered for the mission. Now while on said mission, he confesses his love for her and the two share a passionate, intimate moment in a hotel room. By making love, John Connor is conceived and the prophecy set into motion for him leading the humans to victory against their metal oppressors. So the real question is, did John Connor purposely give his father the picture of his mother so that he'd fall in love with her and travel back through time to protect and give her a son? But if that's possible, then how was Connor created on the original timeline or was the time travel always an inevitable factor? Sorry, we're getting way off topic here, but we'll be coming back to this idea because it simply begs an explanation.

But now let's talk about the quote. What can be said? The scene is perfectly written and the chemistry between the two characters is undeniably believable. And seriously, what woman wouldn't want to hear that their man's love drove them to leave their entire world behind, just to be with them? The notion's classic and romantic as hell.

“I love that after I spend day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

The attempt to just remain friends thankfully fails between Harry and Sally in this romantic comedy. After finding themselves not being able to not only just be friends, but unable to live without the other's company, the two finally reunite at the film's conclusion, where Harry delivers this now famous speech. Following Harry's declaration of love, the two share a passionate kiss. The scene is unforgettable and is a true testimony to love in general. Thank you Harry and Sally for proving that no matter how much we fight it, if it's meant to be, love will prevail.

“If the people we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them. Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever.”

I realize that this is a rehash from one of my earlier editions, but how could I leave such a quote out from this Valentine's Day celebration and this one is just downright epic.

While her mom is too busy scoring drugs and sleeping around, young Sarah has to fend for herself and finds comfort with a young couple, Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas). However, the pair soon become the victims of a brutal gang crime and are murdered on Devil’s Night, which happens to be the night before their wedding and Halloween. While the remainder of the movie, as the title hints, is about Draven being guided by a crow that grants him the power to return from death and gain his revenge against the heartless thugs who killed him and he fiancé, Sarah remains a main character and delivers this epilogue at the conclusion. This film sports a variety of memorable lines, but I believe this one to be the most powerful and hold certain truths. If you haven’t seen it and want something different, I say give a watch.

As the quote suggests, true love lasts forever and is undeniable as an angelic Shelly appears to guide Eric away from his misery at the film's conclusion. Driven by vengeance and love, he is finally at peace and departs this life with his beloved.

Forrest Gump: “Will you marry me? I'd make a good husband, Jenny.”

Jenny Curran: “You would, Forrest.”

Forrest Gump: “...But you won't marry me.“

Jenny Curran: “... You don't wanna marry me.”

Forrest Gump: “Why don't you love me, Jenny?”

Jenny doesn’t answer

“I'm not a smart man... but I know what love is.”

The critically acclaimed, award winning, story of Forrest Gump is nothing short of movie perfection. Having met Jenny when he was a mere child, the two's friendship continues to grow throughout the movie and Forrest's infatuation with the woman remains equally consistent. Jenny eventually returns home following the death of Forrest's mom and they share this exchange in dialogue. Although she rejects his marriage proposal, the two make love and conceive Forrest Jr. (Haley Joel Osment). After receiving a letter from the woman, Forrest is reunited with his love and she proposes to him this time. The pair get married and enjoy happiness for a brief time, but Jenny passes away due to an unknown virus, which we all can assume is AIDS due to her early precarious lifestyle involving drugs and unsafe sex. This film will always, as Jenny and Forrest's relationship, hold a special place in our hearts.

Brodie commandeers the microphone

Brodie: “You!”

“I believe you have something that belongs to me.”

Shannon Hamilton (Ben Aflect): “Yeah, what’s that?”

Brodie: “Not you asshole. The girl. You have my heart.”

Rene: “What can I say, I love the retard.”

Shannon Hamilton [To Rene]: “Well, wait a minute. I thought tonight, we’re supposed to…”

Brodie: Hey, Hamiliton. Let’s try to wrap this up. I promised her breakfast.”

Being one of Kevin Smith's lesser known films, Mallrats actually contains two love stories that conjoin at the movie's conclusion. While T.S. Quint (Jeremy London) and Brandi Svenning (Claire Forlani) seem to be the main focus of the film, I personally like Brodie and Rene because their relationship is more comical. After Shannon Hamilton attempts to prey upon their breakup and sex his ex in an uncomfortable position, Brodie wins her back with a public confession of his love. While T. S. and Brandi come together with a happily ever after ending, Brodie and Rene reunion is certainly appropriate for the pair.

Rocky: “Adrian! Adrian!”

Adrian: “Rocky!”

Rocky: “Adrian!”

Adrian: “Rocky!”

Rocky: “Hey, where’s your hat?”

Adrian: “I love you!”

Rocky: “I love you.”

She embraces him tightly

Adrian: “I love you!”

Rocky: [Completely out of breath] “I love you. I love you”

Adrian: “I love you!”

Rocky: “I love you. I love you”

Adrian: “I love you!”

Rocky is the incredible story of the underdog Italian Stallion going the distance against the heavy weight champion of the world. However, where would Rocky and this movie be without his relationship with Adrian. This is one of my favorite aspects of this flick because as Adrian gets to know Rocky, so does the audience and we learn that there's certainly more beneath his tough exterior. Adrian is Rocky's inspiration throughout this movie and most of the series for that matter. The last few lines of this masterpiece pay tribute to that as the pair confess their love for each other as the bruised and battered boxer prepares to depart from the ring.

Princess Leia: “I love you”

Han Solo: “I know”

This one is just a classic and had to make the list. Originally Harrison Ford was supposed to say something along the lines of "I love you too" or more of a standard response to the sentiment. However, after countless takes on the scene, he said it just didn't feel right. They all agreed that the line just didn't fit the smuggler's persona, so Ford uttered the phrase that would end up in the final take and there you have it. An unforgettable line because of its originality and fitting nature.

George McFly: “Hey you, get your damn hands off…..” Exhales nervously

Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson): “I think you got the wrong car McFLy.”

Lorraine Baines: “George help me, please.”

Biff Tannen: “Just turn around McFly and walk away.”

Lorraine Baines: “Please George.”

Biff Tannen: “Are you deaf McFly? Close the door and beat it.”

George McFly: “No Biff. You leave her alone.”

Biff Tannen: “Alright McFly. You’re asking for it and now you’re gonna get it.”

Lorraine pleads with Biff and is tossed to the ground. As Biff laughs mockingly at the young woman, George’s fist clenches tightly in anger before he knocks the oversized brute out cold.

George McFly: “Are you okay?”

The entire Back to the Future Franchise revolves around the idea that one incident can drastically alter future events. If it wasn't bad enough that Marty McFly's parents possessed a less than desirable relationship, the teenager accidentally prevents them from ever meeting when he finds himself stranded in 1955. Also, did I mention that his mom begins to become infatuated and downright obsessed with him. Marty spends the rest of the movie trying to set the timeline strait and bring his parents' teenage counterparts together, before he's erased from existence. Not only does he obtain this feat, but alters history by instilling confidence in his father that creates a more solidified foundation between George and Lorraine. Ironically, George's lifelong bully, Biff, from the original timeline plays an intricate role in this process as the brute is knocked out after tossing the young woman to the ground. George gains his confidence and proves his love for Lorraine, instead of her falling for him via a "Florence Nightingale" scenario.
